Quality education and training for all

European Innovative Teaching Award

The European Innovative Teaching Award is a new initiative established by the Commission Communication on achieving the European Education Area by 2025.

The objectives of the Award are to

  • celebrate the achievements of teachers and schools and to give credit to their work
  • identify and promote outstanding teaching and learning practices
  • provide means for mutual learning
  • highlight the value of the Erasmus+ programme to European teacher collaboration and the establishment of the European Education Area

Like the Erasmus+ Teacher Academies, this new initiative supports teachers and trainers in their careers by promoting professional excellence, networks and communities of practice, as well as learning together through European cooperation projects.

Categories and selection

In each Erasmus+ programme country, projects will be awarded in the following 4 categories

  1. early childhood education and care
  2. primary education
  3. secondary education
  4. vocational education and training (VET) schools

The awarded projects are selected by the Erasmus+ National Agencies, who are involved in shaping this initiative through a co-creation process.

The Award will have a different thematic focus each year, rewarding teachers and schools who through their projects have addressed a particular topic listed among the priorities of the European Education Area.

2021 European Innovative Teaching Award

For 2021, the thematic focus of the Award is distance and blended learning, in close connection with the Digital Education Action Plan and the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 16 September 2021, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, and Slovenian Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Dr. Simona Kustec, launched the first edition of the European Innovative Teaching Award and announced the winners for 2021 in the four categories.

2021's activities culminated in the first official European award ceremony on 20 October 2021 in recognition of the excellent work of the 2021 laureates.
