Women remain underrepresented in the digital economy. Today, only 19% of ICT specialists are women and they earn almost 20% less than men do in the sector. In addition, women are also the largest untapped entrepreneurial and leadership potential in Europe: more than 90% of capital invested in European companies goes to all-male founding teams and women make up just 34.4% of self-employed persons and 14.8% of start-up founders. (See Eurostat: ICT specialists in employment)

Faced by a rapid digital transition dictated by fast-evolving technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics, Europe cannot afford to half of its population. Without fair representation, diverse voices and perspectives, it risks biased decision-making and losing out on an inclusive digital transition for all.

In this session, we will explore the reasons why girls and women are steering away from ICT studies and careers and zoom in on concrete best practices set on empowering women to reach their full potential. The discussion will focus on policy measures/projects from all sectors tackling the cultural and institutional barriers behind the digital gender gap and the importance of empowering girls and women to cultivate digital skills and aspire to digital studies and careers.
