Studying in Latvia: comfort in shared similarities
I’m an exchange student from Belarus pursuing studies in Information, Communication, and Technology in Latvia. I chose to study in Latvia because it’s similar to my native country and it’s close enough that I often go back to visit my family and friends. Latvia also offers support to Belarusian students. This allowed me to get a European education.
Learn English, embrace mistakes, and prepare for responsibilities!
The European study experience: a blend of pros and cons
On a positive side, the university’s international office offered a lot of support and there is a strong community of foreign students.
However, I wasn’t aware that I’d need to follow lectures in Latvian, which was challenging.
Maryia’s tips: learn English, embrace mistakes, and prepare for responsibilities
For me, the best thing about studying in Europe is being able to combine work with studies.
My advice for potential students is to learn English and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Also, be prepared for the responsibilities that come with navigating life in a new country, such as finding housing, dealing with banks and paperwork.
Key to finding internships, jobs, and housing: networking and a stroke of luck
I received a scholarship to finance my studies and cover my expenses.
Regarding internships, it was difficult for me to find one because companies either require Latvian-speakers, or are not open to international students. Luckly, I was finally able to find my internship with the help of a friend.
As for housing, I initially lived in a dormitory provided by the university. Later, through acquaintances, I was fortunate to find an apartment.
