After a distinguished career in mathematical physics, Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf gained extensive experience in organizing research and education both nationally and internationally, as the president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and more recently, as the director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA. Both as a scientist and in his administrative roles, Robbert Dijkgraaf remained committed to explore possibilities to both teach and inform people on subjects close to his heart, and to discuss them in-depth – as we have seen in Dutch newspapers, TV shows, and in his own publications (e.g. his book “The usefulness of useless research”).
Being the minister of education as of January 2022, Robbert Dijkgraaf cannot completely hide his analytical background to solve problems or to come to improvements, also with respect to our Dutch education system. In this sense, he distinguishes three elements that need to be united in order to come to a thorough mission for education in the Netherlands, as he mentioned in his opening speech to the academic year at Maastricht university in September 2022: "In my view, the overarching mission for further education in the Netherlands is to connect 3 elements: a high quality, a broad accessibility and a connection with the society we know now and the society we foresee for the future". How we can combine these elements may be elaborated upon in the panel discussion ‘Future-Proofing Education: Trends and Challenges’.
