Statistics are a fundamental tool used by policymakers, researchers, journalists, citizens and businesses in their work and daily lives. The availability of high-quality and trustworthy data is essential to support evidence-based policymaking and the effective evaluation and monitoring of European Union (EU) policies.
Reliable statistics also play a crucial role in countering the spread of disinformation in public and political debates. EU institutions, including the European Commission, produce a wide range of statistics concerning the policy areas in which the Union and its Member States are active.
The Commission also produces data-driven reporting, such as the Education and Training Monitor, and builds its own evidence-based analyses upon statistical data prepared by international partner organisations, for example:
- the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) ‘Programme for International Student Assessment’ (PISA) results
- the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's (IEA) 'International Computer and Information Literacy Study' (ICILS) results
This enables comparisons to be drawn between countries and regions in Europe and for recommendations for the future development of education and training policies to be made.
