European Day of Languages 2026
On 26 September, as each year since 2021, we celebrate Europe’s rich linguistic diversity and the benefits of learning languages.
Language and cultural institutes, associations, universities and schools will take part in a wide range of events across the EU and promote Europe’s multilingual heritage.
Inclusion through language diversity
This year’s motto is “languages unite” - highlighting the importance of language learning and the need to safeguard linguistic diversity in the interests of inclusion, democracy and social cohesion.
Join the virtual event and roundtable
Join the celebrations on 30 September and attend the virtual conference and exhibition hosted by the European Commission, during which you’ll get the opportunity to interact and explore stands, galleries and materials.
The online roundtable “Languages unite - how languages shape inclusion” will explore how languages foster inclusion throughout life - from the classroom to democratic participation and access to public services.
Experts from the field will tackle the following questions
How can we ensure that linguistic diversity becomes a strength rather than an obstacle?
What can teachers do to support multilingual learners?
How do interpretation, translation and clear communication help make sure everyone can participate fully?
The importance of motivation
The Motivation manifesto explains why motivation is so important in the process of learning languages.
It calls on policymakers, teachers, schools and families to create a supportive “motivational ecology” that values all languages equally and encourages life-long learning.
