Seeking pioneering universities to shape future learning and mobility

Higher education institution or European Universities alliance - are you ready to lead the next chapter of digital transformation in European higher education?

The launch event for the interoperability framework offered valuable discussion moments

The European Digital Education Hub (EDEH) is seeking higher education institutions or European Universities alliances to lead the way in testing, refining and scaling up the European higher education interoperability framework (HEIF) during its first years of implementation.

The framework was developed by the EDEH between June 2023 and January 2025.

Why interoperability matters

In a world of increasing mobility, cross-border collaboration, and hybrid learning, the ability to connect digital systems across institutions and countries is more crucial than ever.

Interoperability is a key enabler to

  • transfer learning records, credentials, and qualifications securely and efficiently
  • deliver smooth experiences for students across joint programmes and exchanges
  • share data, tools and knowledge between institutions to build a strong partnership
  • support a Union of skills where learning can flow smoothly across Europe

Who we are looking for

We are seeking pioneering higher education institutions and European Universities alliances that are

  • interested in piloting or testing use cases such as shared catalogues, credential sharing, and others
  • willing to collaborate, learn, and share experiences to contribute to shape and scale-up the framework

What early adopters will do

As an early adopter, you will

  • select a use case(s) relevant to your higher education institution or alliance
  • have a clear strategy and actionable steps for framework integration
  • apply elements of the framework in practice
  • participate in community exchanges and feedback rounds, once every six months
  • help improve and scale the framework across Europe

What you will gain

As an early adopter, you benefit from

  • visibility and recognition as a digital frontrunner
  • priority support from EDEH consortium
  • opportunities to influence EU-level policy and infrastructure
  • peer learning and support from a community of practice

How to apply

Submit your higher education institution or European University alliance interest through our short application form. You should outline

  • your organisation and role – applications from university and alliance leadership are especially encouraged
  • your area of focus and planned use case(s) for the next six months
  • key people involved
  • higher education institutions involved, if applying on behalf of an alliance

The deadline to apply is 15 July 2025.
