Call for participants: online “squad” on artificial intelligence in education

The European Digital Education Hub is opening a call for participation in an online working group on artificial intelligence in education.

Focus on artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence, or AI, refers to technologies programmed to analyse the world around them and take action to achieve specific goals.

We might not realise it, but AI already plays a key role in our daily lives, from filtering spam mail, to suggesting a new song for us, to finding the quickest route to where we are going.

Theme and format of the “squad”

The rapid developments in AI raise a range of issues and questions we need to address and discuss, especially in education, such as

  • Does it still make sense to give pupils and students written homework when “chatbots” are becoming capable of writing equally or even better texts than humans?
  • How can we use AI for the benefit of everyone involved in digital education, especially learners?
  • How can we handle educational data in smart, efficient, and responsible ways?

The online “squad” will explore these and more questions about AI, as well as the related topic of learning analytics.

A “squad” is a group of persons working together online to produce a specific output. Participants will define the exact focus and type of output to be created by the squad together with a squad leader.

The squad will collaborate online on Teams and will produce a concrete output (e.g. a vision paper, video, podcast, or toolkit) that will be shared across the community.

20 places are available. The squad will run from February 2023 to the end of June 2023. The expected minimum time commitment for members of the squad is one online call (approximately every two weeks), plus about one hour of online work in-between calls.

Upcoming workshop in Bucharest

In addition to the squad, the Hub will host a community workshop on the same topic in Bucharest in June 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed in March).

This two-day event will build on the output of the squad and will offer participants a chance to contribute to discussions in interactive sessions in-person.

All costs for travel, accommodation and food will be covered for selected workshop participants.

There are 30 workshop seats available and participants who have engaged in the squad will be prioritised in the selection process.

A separate call for the workshop will be published within the next months.

Selection criteria

We invite experienced individuals from all sectors of education with knowledge on the topic of Artificial Intelligence to apply.

Participants

  • should understand issues related to AI and be able to demonstrate their insights with examples in the application form
  • may come from all education sectors, policymaking, workplace learning & training and the private sector
  • may be involved in other projects on the topic
  • are expected to communicate squad outputs back to their networks and contexts

How to apply

If you are interested in participating and your profile meets these criteria you can apply online by 31 January 2023.

Should applications exceed the available seats, applicants will be selected based on their interest, their professional background and their ability to contribute to the squad.

There will also be a geographical and gender balance in the squad.
