The report focuses on the development of sustainability skills among learners and the support teachers and schools receive across Europe.

Key perspectives

The report covers primary and general secondary education. It analyses:

  • how and to what extent European education systems embed learning for sustainability in their curricula.
  • how European education systems prepare and support their teachers and school leaders in delivering sustainability education.

The report also explores whole-school approaches to sustainability and examines the integration of learning for sustainability in school activities.

The sustainability competences referred to in this report are defined on the basis of the European GreenComp framework. The data source is a survey run by Eurydice across 39 European education systems on policies and support measures.

Policy background

Eurydice is a network organised by the European Commission with the mission to explain how education systems are organised in Europe and how they work. It publishes descriptions of national education systems, comparative studies devoted to specific topics, indicators and statistics in the field of education.

This report follows the 2021-2030 strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training.
