Tuition fees at European universities

How are tuition fees calculated in Europe?

Studying in Europe is not only of top quality, but also often comes at a more affordable cost than in many other study destinations around the world.

European countries have their own policies for tuition fees, which are most often charged for programmes taught in foreign languages (e.g. English).

Fees can vary according to the

  • origin of the applicant - whether they are a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) national or not
  • level of study, for example Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD
  • duration of studies
  • subject area
  • type of higher education institution - private institutions generally charge higher fees than public ones

In some European countries, study programmes may be free of charge for international students (typically those that are able to study in the language of their host country) or only cost a symbolic fee.

Find out how much tuition will cost

  • go to the country profiles to find out about typical tuition fees per country, if any
  • once you’ve found your country of interest, go to the national portal to find out about specific study programmes that could be of interest
  • check the specific tuition fees for the programmes of interest and compare conditions between programmes
  • see if the institutions offering the programmes provide any scholarships or financial support, compare offers and conditions
  • if not offered, look for alternative sources – national scholarships or other sources of funding
  • when calculating tuition fees, don't forget to consider the cost of living in that country
