Study online: e-learning opportunities in Europe

Have you had to postpone your plans to study in Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you looking to further develop your skills?

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many universities in Europe are adapting their teaching to offer blended learning – a mixture between onsite and online study – and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

MOOCS, in particular, are a great way to gain an insight into the teaching methods at a university before beginning a full programme.

In some European Union (EU) Member States, your study abroad experience could begin remotely, at first studying from home, and continue on campus as soon as the public health situation allows it.

Other European universities offer possibilities to study bachelor’s and master’s degrees taught entirely online.

For more information, visit the website or contact the International Office of the universities to which you are interested in applying. Take the Study in Europe test to help chose the EU country for your future studies!

To find information on current entry restrictions and public health measures for each EU Member State in the 24 official EU languages, visit the Re-open EU website.

For further information on entry restictions, visit the European Commission's coronavirus response website.

How to find an online course?

There is a wide range of e-learning courses available online. Discover a selection of online learning platforms and EU-funded projects providing e-learning resources.

Many universities also offer online courses for working professionals. Some e-learning programmes offered in collaboration with commercial open education platforms may carry a charge.

However, a trial period may be available to allow you to try the course to see if it meets your interests and educational needs before paying in full.

Gain demonstrable experience

For completing some online courses, particularly those requiring significant study hours and paid courses, you may receive a certificate of achievement.

Online education is an excellent way to continue learning from your own home or to combine study with work.

Whether you're a student looking to learn something new or a professional seeking to improve your skills, online courses can help to promote your continued development.
